The Long and Short of It

Recently, I was contacted by a customer to shorten this maxi dress. Now, there are some things in my shop that i would NEVER take scissors too, but as i truly understand the hesitation towards a maxi dress, I had my friend and part time seamstress (laurie) shorten this dress. I love how it turned out and I hope the customer does too (its in the mail right now).

I just have never felt comfortable in a maxi length dress--they make me feel SO short.
And seeing how cute this turned out kindof made me want chop off all the vintage maxis that I have for the shop.
what do you think? Do YOU wear and like maxi dresses?

  1. This was a cute idea, i need to start shortening some of the things I have to list for my shop as well! That sewing pile just got a little bigger!

  2. I can understand both your hesitation to shorten (there are dress/fabrics I wouldn't touch) and your costumers need to shorten maxis. I have about 5 dresses I want to shorten right now - just because shortening them gives them a more modern look (rather than old in a bad way, which is sometimes the case) and will enable me to wear them daily.

  3. It looks so much better shorter :)
I personally don't do maxi dresses, though I think that some of those doing the boho hippy look can pull them off and look good.

  4. cute alteration result! prefer to wear maxi dresses with a modern look, usually sleeveless and with no ruffles.

  5. Maxi dresses are so tricky. I'm hesitant to wear them too, because they do seem a little dated, but once I get them on they are SO comfy and always look cuter than I expect. I still don't wear them though, ha ha. I think the alteration on this one looks great!

  6. Looks great! I used to wear maxi dresses but can't really so much anymore. I like my legs to be able to move a bit.

I am actually going to be shortening a dress I bought on etsy the other day that is a maxi dress. Hopefully I don't ruin it.

  7. I love wearing maxi dresses, but not all of them and not all the time. Some of them are just too costumey for my liking. Let's take the one in this posting, I would have felt like I stepped off the set Little House on the Prairie. Which isn't always a bad thing I suppose, my point is I would be much more likely to wear the altered one versus the original. It looks great!

  8. Maxi dresses look horrific on me! I have cut some off before, but only ones that aren't worth much :) I think this one turned out great!

  9. I'm tall, so maxi dresses show of my height. I love wearing them but it definitely depends on the style. I prefer these compared to way short dresses. How short is too short?

  10. I think some maxi dresses are still relevant and the dress itself looks better long. But there's some that look more modern and fresh when shortened. The one you have is a great example! I think I only have 2 maxi dresses in my personal closet.
