Anthropologie and Vintage

Anthropologie has some really lovely clothes. But a lot of the elements that make their clothing so pretty are from vintage inspiration. There's nothing wrong with this since its hard to find any bit of fashion that isn't referencing something. But I wanted to do a little experiment to see if i could find some vintage pieces on etsy similar to anthropologie's pieces. With a little creativity and searching, you can usually find something vintage that will be nicer to your wallet, more interesting and one of a kind. (plus you're supporting a small business owner :)

i think i might make this a semi-regular post, because it was so fun to hunt down these items.
what are your thoughts?
thanks for reading,

  1. You did such a great job! I prefer the vintage for the most part. Maybe that's why 9 times out of 10 I come out of Anthro empty handed but with a list of "to shop" or "to make"!

  4. Excellent post!! When I used to work at Anthropologie, every time I wear a vintage pieces customers will ask me where in the shop they can find my outfit. Vintage pieces last much more than Anthropologie clothes (since some of them are not that well made:( ).

  5. This is such a great new feature idea! it also reinforces my thoughts on buying vintage, recycled instead of new!

  6. This is seriously the best pre-holiday shopping post ever. Sharing this everywhere I can!

  7. you found some great pieces! I have definitely done that for a few anthropologie styles- I found some great lace blouses in the spring that way!

Although sometimes you can't quite find the vintage piece you're looking for and then it's nice to have the option of buying something new in whatever size you need!

  8. I love the selections you've made! I prefer the vintage as well, though I love to take a great bargin from the Anthro sales rack and mix it with some vintage for my own unique look.

  9. wow, you did good. i have done these comparisons too on my blog long time ago, i need to start it again. but i love yours and great way to show the differences and how if you can't afford the brand name you may be able to afford the vintage brand name which is an original and not a replica!

  10. You found some great matches! I'd love to see more of these posts! Anthro is wonderful, but less expensive vintage look-a-likes are definitely out there.

  17. genius!! and for the most part, you'll end up looking more original and unique with the vintage items than with the store bought mass-made pieces.
thanks for this little experiment (and for featuring my coat).

  18. You should definitely do a regular post like this. There are so many advantages to shopping vintage. There was some Tweet by American Pickers the other day that went something like, "You know you're a picker when you can't imagine paying retail price for something." Hahah, so true!

  19. Love it. I'm not at all a fan of Anthropologie/UO. The vintage items you've chosen are beautiful alternatives! You did an excellent job.

  20. I love this post!

This is so great, please make this a semi-regular thing. I love Anthropologie, but I can never justify shopping there because of the cost. I like that they are putting out pieces of clothing with some style and flair to them.

And honestly, i love vintage more because the clothing has a history. next time I see something I love at Anthropologie, I should definitely try to hunt something similar down on Etsy!

  21. great post! it's funny isn't it how we can just about always find something so similar to what we see in the 'big shops'....and I agree with Dalena vintage that it's so difficult to pay full retail when we know exactly how to find great pieces that are one of a kind and just a weeeee bit cheaper!

  22. not to mention the quality is FAR superior when you buy vintage. love this post.

  23. I'm sorry if this sounds so negative but as a seller of vintage clothing for past 20 years -it drives me crazy that people will pay big prices for clothes like Anthropology, but getting them to pay even a quarter of that amount for a real vintage piece is a hard sell!
